Life Legacy


Herman D. Mathers, 86, of Middlebourne departed this life Wednesday January 6, 2010 in New Martinsville Health Care Center. He was born March 22, 1923 in Ritchie County a son of the late Harry and Flossie Smarr Mathers.

Herman was a retired employee of Union Carbide with 20 years of service. He was a United States Naval Veteran having served in WWII. He was a member of the Middlebourne United Methodist Church.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife Mabel Cunningham Mathers in 2003. A daughter Karen Delores Postlewait. A brother Buck Mathers. Four sisters; Beulah Swartz, Lietha Flemming, Aileen Cunningham and Beth Richards. A grandson James R. Mathers.

Herman is survived by a son Rodney H. Mathers, Marietta, OH. A daughter Connie Knight and her husband Frank of Paden City. A sister Carol Jones and her husband Alfred of Pennsboro.Grandchildren; Brad Knight, Bentley Knight, Kristin Knight, Barrett Postlewait, Debbie Watson and Jerry Mathers. Great grandchildren; Zachary Pierpoint, Katelyn Knight, Bentley Knight, Carter Knight, Devon Knight, Dorian Moore, Seth Watson, Allison Watson and Summer Watson. Great Great granddaughter Caiden Watson.

Friends will be received at 2-4 and 7-9 pm Friday, Furbee Funeral Home, Middlebourne where services will be held 1:00 pm Saturday with Pastor Judy Weekley officiating. Interment Fairview Cemetery, Alma.

Military rites will be provided by VFW Post, 6327, Sistersville, VFW Post 4634, New Martinsville, American Legion Post, 67, Sistersville, American Legion Post, 86, Paden City and American Legion Post, 28, New Martinsville.
